Michael Phelps is "done" with swimmiing
by Nathan'ette Burdine: August 17, 2016

Michael Phelps says he’s “done, done, done” with swimming and that he will not be back for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

But some like the Today Show’s host Matt Lauer and Phelps’ teammate Ryan Lochte aren’t buying it.

Lauer and Lochte believe Phelps will be back to make history once again. Lauer reminded Phelps that back in 2012 he said that he was folding up his swimming towel and calling it a day.

Yet, here it is 2016 and Phelps has a total of 28 medals, with 23 of the medals being gold. Lauer told Phelps, “Four years ago, almost to the day, we sat in London and you said to me when I asked if you’d keep swimming you’d say, ‘done, done, done.’”

Phelps laughed and responded that he is indeed, “done, done, done” and that this Olympics, with the 28 medals, was his “cherry on top of the cake,” allowing him to go out in style.

Lauer, however, wasn’t persuaded. The Today Show’s host pushed Phelps to explain why he (Lauer) should believe that this Olympics is definitely Phelps’ last when he made the same statement in 2012.

Phelps told Lauer that his (Phelps) heightened emotions were an indication to him that this Olympics “was the last time.”

Lauer’s response, “I have a feeling not.” Like Lauer, Lochte doesn’t believe this is the last time the world will see Phelps in the Olympics.

Last week during a conversation with Lochte, Lauer asked him if he thought Phelps would be joining Team USA in 2020 in Tokyo. Lochte responded, “-I guarantee he will be there…So Michael, I’ll see you in Tokyo.”

Lauer played the clip for Phelps. And after watching the clip, Phelps laughed and said, “He might be there but I won’t…I’ll be there watching, cheering everybody on. But I will not be in the pool competing.”

Phelps also said that he doesn’t feel bad about his retirement because he knows the sport will be in good hands: “We are in great shape. Not only with Katy, but with the team that we have now.”
